How To Free Up Hard Disk Space On Windows 10

This tutorial will give you some tips on how to free up Hard Disk space on Windows 10.

If your Hard Drive is running low on space you should first try using Windows 10 in-built 'Disk Cleanup' tool:

This PC > Right-click on the disk, ex. Windows (C:) > Properties > General [Tab] > Disk Cleanup

There you can choose from options like 'Temporary Internet Files', 'Recycle Bin', 'Temporary Files', etc. Once you have selected the desired options you can click 'OK' to safely free up some Hard Drive space.

If you want to go further you could access 'Clean up system files' mode:

This PC > Right-click on the disk, ex. Windows (C:) > Properties > General [Tab] > Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files

One of the popular options you might find there is 'Previous Windows installation(s)'. In case you were wondering if it is safe to remove 'Windows.old' folder, using the 'Disk Cleanup' tool is the right way. But bear in mind that after doing this you will no longer be able to roll back to the previous Windows version you had.

There is another in-built Windows 10 tool that will help you clear up disk space by compressing the folder contents:

Right-click on the folder to be compressed > Properties > General [Tab] > Advanced > Select 'Compress contents to save disk space'

Once you click 'OK' Windows will compress the content and once you go inside the folder you will notice that the files' icons now have two blue arrows at the top-right corner. Apart from that you will be able to use your content just as normal.

In previous steps you learned how to clean up 'Temporary Internet Files'. But in case you are using internet browsers other than 'Edge' or 'Internet Explorer', you can also clear their cache.

Here is how you can clear cache on Mozilla Firefox:

Click on Menu button [top-right corner] > Options > Privacy & Security [Tab] > Clear Data ['Cookies and Site Data' section] > Select 'Cached Web Content' > Clear

Please note that it is recommended not to clear 'Cookies And Site Data' as it might affect some browsing functionalities, for example, keeping you logged into various services.

To clear the cache on Google Chrome:

Click on Menu button [top-right corner] > Settings > Clear browsing data ['Privacy and security' section] > Select 'Cached images and files' > Clear data

Please note that it is recommended not to clear 'Cookies And Site Data' as it might affect some browsing functionalities, for example, keeping you logged into various services.
